Lady Lions' Harper honored at hockey tournament

Ashley Harper of the Erie Lady Lions was awarded the Sara Backstrom
Award in a ceremony Sunday afternoon at the Igloo Ice Arena during the finals of the 14th annual Sarah Backstrom Memorial
Girls/Women Hockey Tournament.
The award is presented to the Lady Lions player who most exemplifies the spirit and
ideals of Sarah Backstrom, one of the first of Erie's girls hockey players who died in 1999 after fighting leukemia.
It
was one of three awards handed out Sunday after three days of play by 68 teams at JMC Ice Arena, Tullio Arena, the Igloo and
Mercyhurst Ice Center. The tournament is one of the premier hockey events for girls on the East Coast.
Ashley Drop
was named the Lady Lion Service Award winner, and Sarah Evan won the Coach Phil Award.
The award is a memorial to Phil
Anderson, a youth hockey coach who died in July 2003.
The tournament
continues Friday through Sunday, with the first senior women's competition at The Igloo. Teams from New York, Pennsylvania
and Ohio will compete in three divisions starting at 8 p.m. Friday. Games start again at 7 a.m. Saturday and 7:10 a.m. Sunday.
